Staten Island is a borough located in the southwestern part of New York City. As the name indicates, it is an island. The Arthur Kill and Kill Van Kull separate Staten Island from New Jersey, while the New York Bay separates it from the rest of New York State. The entirety of Staten Island is located in Richmond County. Although Staten Island has a population of nearly half a million people, compared to the other boroughs it is the least populated. What is lacks in population, however, Staten Island makes up in land - its 59 square miles make it the third largest borough in area. It is the most suburban borough, and it also has the largest area of parkland in New York City.

Staten Island is home to several diverse communities consisting of Italians, Russians, African Americans and Poles. Although it does not have the largest Italian American community, Staten Island does have the highest percentage of Italian Americans in the country. Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion in the borough. Compared to other parts of New York City, Staten Island has fewer Orthodox Jews. Nevertheless, there are several neighborhoods with Orthodox Jewish communities such as Graniteville, Manor Heights, Rossville, Sandy Ground, Woodrow, Bulls Head, Willowbrook, Bay Terrance and Arden Heights. The neighborhood of Willowbrook is most notable for being home of the largest synagogue on Staten Island. In addition to several synagogues, there are a few kosher restaurants on the island too.

Real estate prices on Staten Island vary depending on the location. Visitors can pick from a variety of hotels located all over the island. In terms of income, a large number of Staten Island residents qualify as middle class. If you are into shopping, check out the Staten Island Mall, the only indoor mall and largest shopping center on the island. Staten Island is connected to the mainland by vehicular and railroad bridges. There is also a ferry that connects Staten Island directly to Manhattan. Although New York City is famous for its subways, Staten Island is the only borough that does not have below-ground transportation.
